  • Bio

Dr. Franklin Gaylis graduated in the top 5% of his medical school class at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, with a MBBCh degree (Cum Laude) in 1980. After a year of basic science research, Dr. Gaylis completed his General Surgical training requirements at the University of Minnesota before moving to Chicago where he completed his specialty training in Urology at Northwestern University Medical School. During his research year at Northwestern University, Dr. Gaylis studied prostate cancer and published several papers in peer reviewed journals. He was nominated to the distinguished Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society by the students of Northwestern Medical School.

Today, he remains active in pursuing cutting edge research in the field of prostate cancer and continues to publish his results, primarily clinical outcomes following prostate cancer surgery. He has developed clinical tools aimed at improving outcomes following radical prostatectomy which include better pain control, reduced blood loss, operating times, length of stay, and cost. Dr. Gaylis has also developed a urinary tract dilator instrument to facilitate the efficient removal of kidney stones that has improved the safety of the procedure as well as significantly reducing costs.

Resulting from this experience, Dr. Gaylis was nominated as Medical Director of the Clinical Outcomes Improvement Program at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in San Diego. Together with several colleagues, Dr. Gaylis has developed a comprehensive program to improve quality and measure outcomes which is used throughout the hospital system. He continues to lecture both nationally and internationally on the subject of medical quality.

Dr. Gaylis is Board Certified and practices all aspects of urology but specializes in prostate cancer. He has an academic appointment at the University of California, San Diego, as Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor of Urology in the Department of Surgery and also serves as a consultant for HSAG, a Quality Improvement Organization for Medicare.

Dr. Gaylis is also a fellow on the American College of Surgery and has received the Sharp Grossmont Hospital Physician Philanthropy award for 2009 and is recognized as one of San Diego’s Top Doctors by Checkbook’s guide to Top Doctors.
