Instructions for Upper Endoscopy the day before the procedure

  1. It is very IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS very carefully to avoid having to reschedule your procedure.

If your procedure is before 12:00pm, please do not drink anything after midnight that night before.

If your procedure is after 12:00 pm, you may have clear liquids up to six hours prior to your procedure.

(YOU MAY TAKE ANY CARDIAC OR BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION THE MORNING OF YOUR PROCEDURE WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER.)

2. A conscious sedation is used during the procedure to insure complete relaxation. Due to the use of these drugs you are required to have someone drive you home from your procedure. This person will need to physically come/into the surgery center and sign you out in order to be discharged. California law states that you cannot drive until the next day (at least 12 hours). Find a driver to take you home from the procedure.

**Taxis and other forms of public transportation cannot be used to leave the surgery center unless someone, other than the driver, accompanies you.

If you have any questions regarding these instructions or the exam, please call our office.
